EXPERIENCE

Ontario Certified Teacher (Retired) with 25+ years of continuous service with the Hamilton Wentworth District School Board. I have worked across a wide range of grades and scenarios ranging from working closely with neurodiverse learners students to a self-contained class with students with learning disabilities in Grades 4-6. I also taught online classes during the Covid Pandemic.

As a recently retired teacher from our Public School system, I saw the impact of cuts to education funding. As a result, many students are not getting the quality and quantity of literacy support they need. Having this understanding and experience allows me to help provide something better for your child, especially in Kindergarten to grade 3 when the foundations of literacy are so essential.

QUALIFICATIONS

My recent training as an Associate with the Orton-Gillingham Academy* has allowed me to dig deeper into the “Science of Reading” approach to literacy. I’ve also had additional training and experience working with neurodivergent students. I am continuously updating my skills and training to ensure that I can stay current and relevant. I have Additional Qualifications at the Specialist level in Reading and Special Education.

STUDENT RAPPORT

Establishing and maintaining a rapport with my students is of the utmost importance. Children need to feel safe, respected and heard before they can learn successfully. Students, parents and colleagues have said I am a patient, gentle and compassionate educator.

LITERACY FOCUS

I have made it a goal to stay current in evidence-based pedagogy!  At the present time I will be providing one-on-one tutoring for children from Kindergarten to Grade 6, focusing exclusively on the critical components of literacy – reading, spelling and writing.
This can also extend to homework help and study skills that are literacy based.
